Chapter Ten

“Jacob, stay by my side,” Micah said as he walked down an aisle in Kings General Store. His youngest daughter, Eliza, sat in the seat of the shopping cart. Rebecca was being entertained by Rachel King behind the counter in the back of the store. She’d offered to take Eliza, too, but he thought he could manage Eliza and find the grocery items he needed for the next couple of days. Meals he could fix easily.

“Dat, can I have a cookie?”

“We have cookies at home,” Micah said.

“A cupcake?” Jacob looked up at him, his eyes filled with hope and innocence.

“Ja, maybe a cupcake, but only if you help me shop like the gut boo you are.”

His son beamed up at him with excitement. “What do we need next, Dat?”

Micah ruffled Jacob’s hair as he regarded him with affection. He loved his children. They were his world. Which was why he was willing to marry again—not because he needed a wife but because his children needed a mother.

The image of Katie filled his mind, creating an ache in his heart, as he pushed the cart down the aisle. There had been something about her from the first moment they’d met that captured his attention. But then when he learned that she’d been his younger brother’s betrothed...

She will never marry. He could see her married and with children. With me. His own thoughts shocked him, because he’d loved Anna and he never thought he’d feel that way about any woman again.

Which was why he put distance between them. Katie would never be his.

He glanced outside and saw the sky had turned dark. He had filled his cart with nonperishables. He grabbed a few snacks before he headed to the register area to pay.

Rachel’s husband, Jed, grinned as Micah approached. He was manning the cash register in front while Rachel was in the back where she made sandwiches and other food items.

“Did you find everything you need?” Jed asked with a smile.

“I hope so.” Micah glanced out the window. “Looks like a storm is on its way.”

“Ja, I hope it’s a quick one.”

“Me, too. I’m worried about our farm animals outside.” He needed to get home to ensure their safety, but it would be difficult with the children.

His concern must have been apparent, because with a thoughtful, smiling look at Eliza and Jacob, Jed offered, “Why don’t you head home to check on them? We can keep the children here until you get back. No need to hurry. With this storm, the store wouldn’t be busy for a while.”

“I don’t want to impose.” Micah had come to know the King family well since moving to New Berne. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust them with his son and daughters because he did. He wished that Katie was here. His children were afraid of thunderstorms, and Katie would soothe them and make them feel safe.

Rachel approached from the back of the store, holding Rebecca. “What’s wrong?” she said as if feeling Micah’s concern, just as thunder rumbled in the distance.
